Why Hula Hooping Is Better Than Bex

A few decades ago last century, when I was a wee lass, I recall being an early adopter and keen perfector of all the fads: Elastics, Yo-yo tricks, swap card collecting, caterpillar husbandry, knuckle bones, throwing eggs over the neighbour’s fence, and more.

I remember practising the fine art of hula hooping. However the hoops of yester year, were a far cry from the carnivalesque versions, I am now seeing emerging in clusters, in $2 Shops.

I recall our 1960s hoops being very basic in style and construction; resembling a plastic garden hose, stapled at the centre to form the hoop shape. And as we twirled, like midget, unadorned, anorexic belly dancers - even twirling two hoops in unison (yes we were very good!!) - we lived in fear of that staple coming loose and piercing our stomach. Such dangerous times back then.

Fast forward to now, and the Hula Hoop is back. Did it ever go away, and end up on the nature strip? like the Ab Blaster and other fitness fetishes?

When out perusing some hula hoops the other day, I was chatting to a lady who said if she tried it now, she would snap. Yikes. So I'm thinking: Should I consult my general practitioner before becoming a born-again hula hoopee?
