Resume Rehab With Jenny Foss [JobJenny]

Jenny Foss, aka “JobJenny”, runs a nationally recognized, boutique-style recruiting agency.

She is the author of The Ridiculously Awesome Resume Kit, which aims to help people craft kick ass resumes that will land them interviews. Not just so-so interviews -- GOOD interviews.

It helps readers showcase the things they're best known for, most proud of, and will best position them for success with whatever industry sector they're targeting.

Q & A

Why did you write the book?

I offer a resume writing service, and through this I've discovered that there are many people who a) would like a professional quality resume, but just don't have the funds to invest in our service, and/or b) feel confident that they could write their own killer resume, if only they had step-by-step guidance and input along the way.

And so, I wrote this book.

Most resumes fail to communicate a person's awesomeness clearly and instantly.

They fail because writing a spectacular resume is damned hard.

They fail because so much of the textbooky "how-to" information out there is stale and dated (or just flat out sucks).

They fail because no one has told that person EXACTLY what will make his resume read as awesome as he is in real life.

That's why I wrote the Ridiculously Awesome Resume Kit.

How long did it take to create?

Way too long. :) About a year.

Because JobJenny.com has grown steadily (and quickly), It was admittedly challenging to keep up with day-to-day order demands and write a book simultaneously. I'd squeeze in a couple hours here, a couple hours there for the first several months. For the past three? It's been on the front burner.

Who will benefit the most from the Ridiculously Awesome Resume Kit?

Really, the book should help a wide swath of people, across virtually any career field. I specifically wrote it with these people in mind:

1. Those who know they could write a great resume, if only they had guidance, samples and answers to their questions.

2. Those who would truly love to hire a professional resume writer, but just don't have the funds available (the ebook sells for $39, which is 90% less expensive than my most popular resume package.)

What's the very most important piece of advice in this book?

Your resume is not an autobiography, nor a list of everything you've done through your professional life -- It's a marketing document. A marketing document that aims to land you an interview. You MUST write your resume with a specific goal, target market and marketing purpose in mind.

You usually write in sort of a lippy, humorous tone. Is this book written in a similar manner?

Uhhhh, does a bear sh#t in the woods? Do I like pinot gris? Do the makers of Nutella deserve a medal of honor?

Of course it's written in a similar manner.

The premise behind JobJenny.com and the Ridiculously Awesome Resume Kit is people really don't appreciate it when you come across all preachy and know-it-all-ish. Especially stressed people, which is exactly what most job seekers are. I infuse levity at every logical opportunity, not only because that is my personality, but more importantly? Because I believe you can deliver spot-on advice and information in a way that makes people smile and laugh. Just because it's a serious topic doesn't mean readers can't have a bit of fun along the way.

What should people who are scared of writing a resume do?

Think like a marketer. Get step-by-step guidance. Stop being paralyzed. Stop listening to every well-intentioned relative or friend that really doesn't know what they're talking about anyway. Buy the book. Get moving. (Not necessarily in this order).
